The unit mainly brings together geographers, urban planners and sociologists, but also researchers from other disciplines (environmental psychology, architecture, communication sciences, etc.). The scientific objective is to contribute to the understanding of the spatial dimension of society.

Three areas of research are being developed:

- Practices, experiences and representations of space
- The (re)localisation of politics: a process under tension

ESO-ANGERS is a multi-site unit bringing together the universities of Angers, Caen, Le Mans, Nantes,  Rennes 2
